The death of a loved one can be a time of emotional stress
and grief for those left behind. Making burial arrangements long
before they are needed can ease some of the grief.
"It just makes sense to make those plans ahead of
time", said Stephen Bittner, President of the
Cincinnati Catholic Cemetery Society. "The one thing you will
need eventually is a cemetery lot. Why not ease the burden of a
grieving spouse or children by doing this ahead of time?"
The best part of pre-planning your burial arrangements is
that your loved ones won't have to make decisions without you.
This will give you the peace of mind that your wishes are carried out.
The fact is, two-thirds of the time it is the wife who
outlives her husband. She is the one who will have to make the
funeral decisions. In most other cases children must make the
decision for their parents.
"We hear them say, 'I'm sure this is what he would have
wanted,' or 'I wish we would have talked about this.' By
pre-planning, loved ones don't have to worry about making
decisions for you."
Another consideration is cost. Through pre-planning, you
avoid financial worries at the time of death. "When you
make pre-planning arrangements, you buy at today's rate, when
you are sure you can afford it," Steve said.
Steve said about 50 percent of burial arrangements are made
ahead of time, with the other 50 percent waiting until the time
of death. But the number of those who pre-plan is growing as
more people become aware of their options.
"We plan for almost everything in our lives. Why not
take it to its conclusion? Why not be prepared?"
